Holy Ground
Holy Ground (formerly MSMH's chapter of His Father's Heart Ministries) is where
discipleship begins. Men and women who are homeless, or nearly homeless, are
invited to this place of refuge to get closer to Jesus Christ. We want each
guest and volunteer to develop in every area of his or her life. To this end,
our program includes teaching, imparting skills, and building character to fulfill
the Great Commission.
MSMH underwrites a large group meeting at 5100 Travis
on Thursday evenings (open to all). The doors open at 6:30, when volunteer lay
leaders serve refreshments and pot-luck dinners (from our volunteer cooks), followed
by cleanup. They also share the love of Jesus through mentoring and encouragement,
as well as by offering accountability, discipleship, fellowship, and networking.
Those with gifts of hospitality and administration will feel especially effective
in this setting, which currently serves about 150 people per week. The dinner follows
a time of fellowship, praise and worship, and a spiritually-motivated message. These
Thursday evenings also give us an opportunity to share with new attendees about the
various ministry services we provide. Our long-term goal is to help people get off
the streets and into transitional or permanent housing, ultimately becoming employable
and productive citizens.
After we moved to our new facility in October of 2009, the Thursday night program
experienced such rapid growth that we no longer found ourselves in a small-group
setting. So His Father's Heart Ministries -- which works with ex-offenders
and family members of those currently incarcerated -- was renamed Holy Ground,
and the ministry has now been extended to include small group activities on Monday
and Wednesday nights, as well as Sunday afternoons following services. We are planning
other outreach activities as the Lord leads.
