Holy Ground
Holy Ground is where discipleship begins. Men and women who are homeless,
or nearing homelessness, are invited to this place of refuge to get closer to Jesus Christ.
We host a total of about 200 guests each week. We want each person to develop in
every area of his or her life. To this end, our program includes meeting physical
and spiritual hunger through feeding, inspiring, teaching, imparting skills, and
building character -- to fulfill Christ's Great Commission (Mark 16:15, Matt. 28:19-20,
John 21:15-17).
Holy Ground hosts its large group meeting at 5100 Travis
on Thursday evenings (open to all). The doors open at 6:00, when volunteer lay
leaders serve refreshments and pot-luck dinners (from our volunteer cooks), and
afterwards clean up. They also share the love of Jesus through mentoring and encouragement,
as well as by offering accountability, discipleship, fellowship, and networking.
Those with gifts of hospitality and administration will feel especially effective
in this setting, which currently serves about 100 people per week. The dinner follows
a time of fellowship, praise and worship, and a spiritually-motivated message. These
Thursday evenings also give us an opportunity to share with new attendees about
Holy Ground's small-group support meetings held Monday through Wednesday nights, as
well as Main Street's various other ministries. Our long-term goal is to help
people get off the streets and into transitional or permanent housing, where they
have a better chance to ultimately become employable and productive citizens.
Our current small groups meetings (which do change from time to time) are listed on
the "Small Groups" page. Led by the Holy Spirit's work in these lives, we remain
open to creating new outreaches as we see needs arise and as the Lord leads us.
For specific situations, to refer someone, or to get involved, check with us to
find out what's "in the works"!
