How to Volunteer with Shepherd's Center

Interviewing: Choose one or two 3-hour morning shift(s) per week, Mondays and/or Wednesdays, from 9 a.m. to noon. Shepherd's Center interviewers generally work in teams of two when assessing clients' needs for rent, utilities, transportation, etc. New volunteers are always paired with an experienced interviewer. Basic computer skills and biligual skills are helpful, but not necessary.

Hospitality 1: Choose one or two 2-hour morning shift(s) per week, Mondays and/or Wednesdays, from 8 to 10 a.m. These volunteers assist in our reception lobby - we'd like two volunteers per morning for each day. Serving, listening, and praying with our clients are the major skills needed; helping with trouble-shooting and facilitating paperwork may also be involved. Training is provided, and bilingual abilities are an asset but not necessary.

Hospitality 2: For Houston Community Voice Mail, one or two 3-hour morning shifts per week, Mondays and/or Wednesdays, from 9 a.m. til noon. This person will canvas clients to identify those that would like to receive a free voice mail each day, set up voice mails for each client, maintain a log book and fax in sign-up sheets. As needed, you will request new log-in reports, deliver numbers monthly to the Director, download messages to MSMH from the regional office, and answer questions from clients. Training is provided, and bilingual abilities are an asset but not necessary.

Telephone Reception: Choose one or two morning shifts per week; this person will receive and direct callers, from 9 a.m. til noon. We need 1 to 2 volunteers to fill a total of 6 to 8 hours each week, answering our primary phone, routing calls, and/or taking messages, setting appointments for Shepherd's Center clients, and helping direct clients to other agencies that may be more appropriate. Basic computer skills are needed (to set appointments); bilingual abilities are preferred, but not essential. Training is provided.

Clerical: Choose one or more 4-hour afternoon shifts per week; the staff assistant position(s) with Shepherd's Center is open for a person (or persons) who enjoys records management, having computer and organizational skills, experienced in data input (of information provided by the interviewers), as well as filing, copying, and sorting of information. We are seeking volunteers to commit to a specific day (or days), preferably in the afternoons, Monday through Friday. Training is provided; must be detail-oriented; no biligual abilities needed.
