What are your favorite days of the week? Mine are Tuesdays and Thursday – the days I get to volunteer at Main Street Ministries.
Many years ago Phil Pierce, the director of Operation ID, suggested that I consider volunteering. I was intrigued by the concept of helping the disenfranchised obtain IDs and Birth Certificates. If you are homeless, not having an ID means no access to shelters, treatment facilities, housing, employment, or other services to help you get back on your feet.
One Tuesday morning, I showed up at OpID and answered the call. As I got to know the ministry on a deeper level, I realized that by the love of Jesus Christ and the empowerment of the Holy Spirit, God was using volunteers like me to change lives right in the backyard of FPC.
We not only provide support for IDs, but more importantly we share God’s love through smiles, hugs, and sometimes even cookies. We pray, listen, and give of our time - we care. People we serve often arrive very apprehensive; what an incredible joy to see them leave with a smile and an attitude of HOPE.
Volunteering at MSM has profoundly change my life, my faith, and my relationship with the Lord. Every hour I spend here, I am humbled by His endless love and forgiveness. I know that it is only by His grace that I am here serving; I could just as easily be the one needing help.
It is a privilege to carry out God’s commandment to love your neighbor, right here at Main Street Ministries. Please come and visit us and see what God is doing in our neighborhood!
