I had just read Mark 4 where Jesus tells a girl ‘Talitha cumi’ - meaning ‘my child, arise’ - when my phone rang. It was one of our Family HOPE participants.
She was calling to ask for a phone number to Family Services of Greater Houston so she could enroll in financial coaching. She also wanted to let me know that she had scheduled her first of sixteen meetings with a counselor from DePelchin Children’s Center who would be going to her home to help her learn new parenting skills.
Then she told me about her new job,
"It's what I always wanted to be, a case manager... and now I am one. Last night I was standing in the middle of my kitchen and a song came on the radio. The words were ‘praising God all the time’. That is what I need to be doing, just praisin' God all the time for everything He is doing in my life.
I used to look in the mirror and know I was a grown woman, but I was scared to be grown... and now I am being that woman! I don’t have to be afraid anymore.”
Just five weeks before, when she first walked into my office, she appeared to be completely overwhelmed and virtually hopeless. Now, I am moved to tears as I watch her entire life being transformed before my very eyes.
I believe Jesus has spoken into her life – Talitha cumi. And, she is rising.
